Dallas Heritage Village/Old City Park

Dallas Heritage Village/Old City Park – Harwood at Beaumont St. Dallas Heritage Village sits on the site of Dallas’ first city park, which was a gathering place for many Jews on the Sabbath and holidays. Several congregations were in close proximity to City Park, including Congregation Shearith Israel at Park Ave. and Eakin St. The Columbian Club, a Jewish social club was also located across from City Park. Additionally, next to the northeast side of the park, the now demolished Pocahontas street housed the Jewish Federation of Social Services and the Jewish Community Center in Dallas from 1927 to 1958. Formerly the Dallas Elks Club, the JCC on 1817 Pocahontas Street was sold to a Dallas Jewish Social club named the Parkview Club in 1920 who donated the property to the Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA). Following several years, numerous renovations to the property, and the creation of the Young Women’s Hebrew Association (YWHA) in 1923, the building was officially deeded to the Jewish Federation of Social Services in 1927 and became the Dallas Jewish Community Center.
